What are headshots? And what is “portrait photography”?
I would say that “portraits” are pictures of people, and “headshots” are mainly about the head and face.
Most headshots are taken for a specific purpose. For example “actor headshots” and “business headshots”. Please contact me directly if you are interested in either of these because I have some special packages available.
I am increasingly asked to take business headshots in order to give a human face to small online businesses. It is important to get these right, because your headshot is what the public sees. You need to look professional, and your headshot needs to be consistent with your branding.
In my opinion a photo portrait should be an accurate representation of who you are, but at the same time be as flattering as possible. They can be realistic (actor headshots need to be, for example) or dramatic.
The “flattering” component comes from knowing about posing, composition, camera angles, what lens to use, and above all lighting. If you don’t like the word “posing”, think of it as “the position of your body”.
Depending on the purpose of the photos, some retouching may be appropriate. We will discuss this. In any case I routinely remove temporary blemishes.
I have an enviable reputation among my peers as a “master of lighting”. I am often asked by other photographers “how did you light that?”
Human beings look different from each other. We have differently shaped bodies, and different faces. Different faces require different types of lighting to make them look at their best.
We will discuss the kind of portrait photography you want in your pre-shoot consultation, and I will design my lighting accordingly.
If you just want headshots and you are a busy person, we can work efficiently and you can be in and out relatively quickly if that is what you want. If you want me to take some more dramatic portraits as well as your headshots, I will not charge any extra for taking them.
